Sheesh.

Woke up. Eye's closed tight against the light. Lad banging around in kitchen. Cat complaining about the catering. Alarm clock should have gone off by now surely. Yes it should have Quick fiddle with sleep destroying unit - some git had bumped the volume knob in the night

Okay, out of bed. Just enough time to drag on cycling gear and get going. Look out window. Hmm, its been raining. Why's that bloke building that big ark like boat? "I'll drive you down son. Put your bike on the back and you can ride home."

Just enough time for a quick shower. Manage to shave without cutting throat. Stir up lad who's chatting with ratbag mates on the computer. Reach into pocket for keys. Where are the car keys? Frantic search. Everything out of pockets. Check by phone, by computer, down side of comfy chair. Bugga. Don't tell me I left them in the ignition

Keys in ignition. Car still in driveway Ignition left on. Battery dead - we're talking really dead, wouldn't even fire the central locking.
Shower of rain comes through to remind me why we didn't take the bikes.
Have to take the MG. Haven't driven her for a while, hope she starts

MG is covered in bird poo - birds have discovered they can shelter from the rain (that 'r' word again) by sitting on the widscreen. Wash windscreen. Roll back tonneau cover. Shower of rain comes through. Bugger it, I am NOT putting up the soft top.

No problem with MG battery because it now lives on a flow charger to counter it's chronic 'going flat' fetish. Carbies dry from car being left to sit. Fuel pump sulky from car being left to sit. Battery spins motor quite briskly, briskly, not so briskly, 'okay I'll still spin that motor but I'm getting tired'. Lad looks worried. Shower of rain comes through. Engine stutters into life.

Phew. Got him to school on time - increased 'cool factor' turning up in a sports car even if it is dirty. I made it home before the next shower of flamin' RAIN.

And all this before me first cup of coffee

My chrome bumber B would throw the water over your head at 80 km/hr. This thing's a rubber nose and you have to be doing 100 It's nowhere near as comfy in the cockpit either

The 'drive quickly' theory works for me and I have also had success in explaining why I was speeding to a constable who foolishly asked. The problem is that the rain is always heaviest when you are sitting at a red light!!!

I remember with my first B, getting caught by one of those flash downpours that Sydney produces plus one of those instant traffic jams Sydney used to do quite well in the eighties. I was sitting in the middle of the road with the tonneau pulled up over my head When I got her home, the water level was above the carpet pile ... just.

The other enduring memory of that day was trying to do a right hand turn through a miniscule gap in the traffic (still in pouring rain) and just sitting there with the rear wheels spinning

Yeah my trip home involves a freeway, that usually kept running just fast enough. I do remember regulaly geting on one end as it was just starting to rain, and by halfway it was bucketing down.

The looks you get as you drive along, pouring rain and the roof down. Luckilly there was a bridge just before my exit, so I could stop under the bridge and put up the roof before I had to stop. The other solution was I had an umberella in the car, and would sit at the lights holding up this umberella until the lights changed. That got even more laughs

The tonneau always was the thing about the MGs that I liked. But the Peugeot 504 cabrio still has my vote as the best looking sports convertible that someone who has a normal wage can afford. That wouldn't be because I own one of the 6 in Australia would it?
