Hi there,

We're living in a unit and would like to rip up our carpet and put floorboards instead.

We have people below us, and are aware we would need to get some sort of sound proofing material to place under the boards. Can anyone give me some idea of a product (or a type of product?) that would be appropriate? Is it expensive? Can you install it yourself or does it have to be done professionally? I've seen Regupol and some sort of foam mat underlay. Is this on the right track?

What we have now is carpet over the top of parquetry flooring. The building was build in 1966-1967 and I'm guessing that at the time they didnt have to comply with noise guidelines/laws because the parquetry was placed directly over the floor (ie: no soundproofing underneath it) so it is apparently hellishly noisy for the people downstairs (this was pretty much the reason why the previous owners put carpet down). So, I cant use the current parquetry floor for that reason. Obviously I can tear up the carpet - not a big issue. However, would I also need to remove the parquetry too, or can I just place the soundproof over it and then the new floorboards on top?

Thanks for any advice!/
