Hi, I have read through a few of the threads to try and find a solution but nothing seems to match my problem.

I have installed a hardwood deck using a timber called Belian (??) which is an Indonesian hardwood. It was recommended by a friend who did a screen etc, and came up really nice when oiled.

It is naturally dark similar to merbau, but maybe a bit darker.

I re-oiled it a year or so ago and it has basically just turned dark brown with little or no grain visible. I used the Cabots natural decking oil. It was tacky for a few days afterwards and has just stayed dark.

I'm thinking I may need to sand it back to be able to re-see the grain etc, or is there an acid type product that may remove the bulk of the oil?? If its sanding, then its a very long time punching down nails (deck is 6.5 x8m).

My only other thought is to forgo the look of timber and use a decking paint and put some colour to the deck, which would seem a waste after spending money on hardwood.

Any knowledge you can share would be very helpful.'

Thanks

Chris
