Surface sealed but I want a stain

Gidday all,

I just completed a lovely wine rack, sanded it and used a sanding sealer to achieve a smooth as surface. Problem is that I wanted a teak colour to my cyprus pine project. I realise if I had of stained PRIOR to sealing I would have no problems, so how do i get that look now without having to sand it bare?


Also will the EEE ultra shine (I think!) polish you sell give a piano type finish over a sanding sealer?

I'm sure others can tell you more than I, but a couple of ideas...

Grab a couple of offcuts of the same material, hit them with the sanding sealer just as you did with the project, and then try staining over the top. You could also try tinting a poly or whatever you want to use as a finish - there are a few types of tinting stains. Doing it that way you just keep applying finish coats until you get to the colour you want. Goes on more evenly than staining bare wood often does.

Personally I think sanding sealers are a pain in the ass Prefer to 'feel' the grain myself.

As the mentioned in the previous post a tinted varnish or such is probably the go. Not all the coats may need to be tinted.
Or perhaps a coloured wax type finish? Coloured traditional wax??

I love sanding sealer it glues the hary bits down real well & can make sanding easier sometimes.
