How about enabling the members list to be sorted by location?

For what reason? It makes more sense for it to be alpha name. Users don't usually search by location but rather name

My suggestion was so that a member could locate other members living nearby; however, to implement this effectively, it might be necessary to ask members to include their postcode in their profile, so that members could be sorted by postcode.

"Nearby" is relative, as is the size of postcode areas. My postcode encompasses an area that takes several hours to drive from north to south.

Thanks Doorstop, good days and bad days but the former are starting to outnumber the latter. Now if I could only get this 'puter sorted out so that the text didn't arrive on the screen well after I finish typing I might even be posting here a bit more.
