York Reverse Cycle Aircon problem

Hi all,
I have about 10 yo York Reverse Cycle Aircon. About a month ago the valve started making loud whishy noise and sometimes ac would blow cold air instead of hot air. AC technician came for maintenance, refilled with gas (he said there is nothing wrong with the valve), but the problem still happened next day. Another guy came in, and said that it is the valve that's causing the problem. He said that they will send me the quote for replacing it, but one month - and a few phone calls later (and $330 for maintenance) - I'm still waiting and freezing in my place.

So, the question is - is there anything I can do to make the damn valve work? I opened the unit, knocked it with a rubber handle, but haven't actually seen anything that looks like a valve (to be honest I don't even know what it looks like). The valve seems to be completely broken now, as does not matter what I do (switch to cold/hot, on/off), it's always cold air inside, and hot on the outside of my place.

Does anyone know a good York AC technician who could fix the problems like this?

From what you have said i assume your talking about the reversing valve? If thats the case, any good refrigeration mechanic will be able to replace it for you.

Yep, sounds like a reversing valve. Mongrel to replace - I think they put the reversing valve in place and build the unit around it! I've only ever done it on warranty jobs, but I wouldn't expect much change from $500, unless it is only the solenoid on the valve that needs replacing.

Yep, that's the reversing valve. I think some people call them solenoids as well.

it might be worth wondering about the lifespan of this aircon and the future costs of repairs versus the cost of buying a new one that should be more efficient and come with another warranty
