Deck regulations in S.E. Melbourne?

G'day,

I'm soon to start work on my verandah (deck).

Without going into the specifics of the build, what are the building regulations in the Yarra Ranges? I'm not getting a permitt of any such because I think it's bs, a waste of time, money, too many hurdels to jump over and too much red tape, and I can't see justificastion of suplying fees associated with draftsman etc. (yeah, I expect to get for this, but so ) and my my neighbours have no objections to it.

I've had a look at the council website and as can be expected it gives no information, to stop the likes of me I suppose.

Height of the verandah will be about 2' - 3' in parts roofed in laserlight. Approx. 5m x 3m

One thing I'm interested to know is the general rules of distance from fence lines.

Legally, you need a hand rail over 1m in ht. (I'm pretty sure that's right, but don't blame me if it's wrong).
there's one bit of info If the deck is over 1m from the ground level, that is.

Yep, it'll have a rail Just forgot to mention that bit.

Probably similar regulations in Oz, or advisable anyway: Handrail spacing should be small enough to prevent toddler passage; max 4" (100mm) between verticals or parts in interior region, max 2" (50mm) from deck to bottom rail, if used. Special situation at stairs: max 6" (150mm) round opening in the triangle formed by tread, riser, and bottom rail. Use of bottom rail makes it easier to sweep off tree debris; DAMHIKT.

First of all I agree that Shire of Yarra Ranges is difficult to deal with.

As for the deck the following information can be found by navigating their site:

For setbacks overlooking etc try http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/planningsc...nges/home.html and check clause 54.

You will also need to be careful with fire ratings if it is close to the boundary.
