Help with deck roof
Hi Folks,
Need some help regarding my deck roof.
<O<O
It’s for a front deck about 20m2 which adjoins the existing house on two sides (refer pic 1). All that is on the plans for the roof is cold panel to manufacturers spec however on investigations it looks like this is gonna cost $2k. The other half has rung a few suppliers like Ritech, spanline and Paneltec and freezer panel/cold panel roofing is over $100 a lineal Meter which seems huge. Now I know it’s easy to install as per Pic2 but $100 a meter? Is this the norm and anyone got any suggestions (suppliers and price etc.)? Other option is to build a normal roof (pic3) which I am assuming I could do for a fraction of the price so what was peoples opinion on this (suppose its an issue with head height due to attaching to fascia etc.). Anyone got some experience and care to comment?<O
Now just to throw another option in there the back deck was done freestanding over the existing roofline and it looks great and works great (breezes and light etc.) however to do the same design at the front I would need to pick up the rafters in the existing roof (as per Pic4) and I suppose I am hesitant as there will be 4 points for water penetration. Seen it done a few times around the traps so what was peoples opinions? Where can I get the hardware to support the beam and seal off the roof (just custom orb) etc?<O
Thanks in advance

I like the higher option myself, as you say plenty height and hot air not trapped, but I never go through the existing roof for support at the top. Just seems like asking for trouble eventually.
Always either separate columns or a bracket/beam of some sort off the house wall.
Cheers

I'm not a great fan of roof penetrations but on the occasion where we've designed similar we've used a product from www.roofextenda.com.au

The flat roof (pics 2 & 3) won't drain properly, and will encourage all sorts of biological activity. I'd suggest 2 percent minimum slope. As long as you keep the gutter on the existing roof, you shouldn't get much drainage onto the deck. I agree with Bill's suggestion to isolate the supports; I'd use the roof penetrations only if absolutely necessary, as Peter implies. I'm assuming you'd have insufficient headroom at the posts if you dropped the outboard edge of the flat-roof option to get the required slope; worth checking, though.

I'd keep the fascia of the deck roof the same height as the rest of the fascia. Re-use the existing fascia and gutter and you won't have to buy any. Install your rafters level, from a pitching plate attached to the wall of the house. Install graduated battens on top to give you a 1 or 2 degree pitch, then install a flat 'Trimdeck' type roof running up under the existing roof. Then line the underside.
It's a bit tricky where the flat roof butts into the return, so you may need to have a special flashing bent up, but I reckon that this will have the most pleasing overall effect, without actually re-structuring the entire roof over that corner. There probably wouldn't be much change out of $2K materials though.
All the other suggestions would look a bit half cocked IMO, especially if you loose a lot of headroom.
