Default What colour wood filler for staining

This has probably been asked many times over. But with all the different putty colours available I'm a little confused as to which one I should use.

My current project is using pine that I plan to stain. Should I use a pine coloured filler then stain my project or use a pre coloured filler the same colour as the stain?

Alternatively is it better to use the pine sawdust with some epoxy to fill the gaps and then stain the project?

    Many thanks

I would recommend a putty in the same colour as the timber. Then stain. Some putties you find may be tintable to help achieve that colour you desire.

    Good Luck.
    Do or do not.....

Just try on a piece of scrap timber first.

I have used Timbermate pine with great success on pine bookcases. It stains very well with waterbased stain - very hard to pick the putty marks. It is a very good product
