Default Sikkens on western red cedar windows

I have to paint some western red cedar windows, with clear, and have heard two different stories, and experinced two different outcomes when using sikkens. Once very good the other substandard. It is extremely pricey, compared to others on the market. Does anybody have any thoughts on sikkins, or other products out there, that are just as good...

Do they face north? My experience with Sikkens is it gives a yellowing to the timber that I didn't want but seems to have good UV protection. I would use a decking oil if doing again, much cheaper too.

I think you are talking about sickens probucts , for exterior make sure you get the right one . Sickens cetol filter 7 is the external one , have used it with excellant results as with "wattyl exterior clear" both give a great finish and last welln western Red.

hi adds as ashore said if you use the correct product the sikkens is a great product there is also a primer you are ment to use under it first.
another good product is intergrain dwd but my prefference is the sikkens and thats all i use for cedar windows. if you use it just make sure you follow the directions i think it works out at 4 coats i primer and 3 top coats but well worth it and it flows on very easy.

I have used Sikkens products for more than 25 years - UV eventually kills all products but IMHO Sikkens is by far the best.

As always prep properly and follow the instructions. The number of Cetol coats depends on how dark you want timber to look and the colour depends on what base colour Cetol stain you choose.

The final coat in the Sikkens two-part system (SuperNatural) is water-based and goes on opaque and dries clear. This will give you 7-8 years on a north facing windows or panels or on a wall subject to extremes and 8-10 years on other walls or under protection.

So long as you keep an eye out for any breakdown of the surface or just redo every 7-8 years you can lightly sand and re-coat with just the top finish. I know of houses that have been maintained like this for more than 30 years without having to take back to timber.

See http://www.tenaru.com.au/ who are Aus distributors.

Ours are done in Sikkens. They face east and west. Looks a million dollars, and that's nearly what it cost.

It gets a touchup as required every 3-5 years. Protected areas would last forever, but those in the sun and weather need regular checking in case of surface damage or breakdown.

What Bloss said. Make sure that you use the supernatural final coat - my cedar window are 7 or 8 years old now and just need redoing now on the Nth - East face. The South side still looks like the internals....brand new.
