Split heat exchanger
My central heating has decided that this is the optimal time to spit the dummy and stop working. According to the service man the heat exchanger has split, causing the unit to shut down. In his opinion, the unit cannot be repaired and the only option is to replace the whole thing, to the tune of around $2000.00.
Considering that one of his opening statements was "I've never seen one of them do that before" I have some doubts about his opinion to say the least.
The unit is a Vulcan Compact 60. Are there options available short of costing two grand other than the other option he suggested which involved bypassing the thermoswitch above the heat exchanger. That sounded like an extremely effecient method of burning down my house to me.
A call to the utility provider tells me the same, got to replace the whole unit, given that they have somewhat of a vested interest, ie; they reckon they are going to get me to buy from them, I am interested in other, unbiased opinions.
