We have recently pulleddown an old pergola in preperation for a new one. I need to know how to fix the rivet holes in the facia. I have tried using a steel putty but the putty keeps falling straight through

Tyrone, fascia isn't usually structural so you shouldn't really be hanging stuff off it (I know lots of people do but it's not really good practice). If you are putting something similar up it'll probably cover the old holes in which case a bit of paintable sealant would be just fine (I would reccommend something in polyurethane like Bostik seal & flex) If the holes are going to show I would put a blob of seal&flex on a rivet, set rivet in hole and wipe off excess. If you really can't stand the look of that you will have to ding each rivet hole in with the ball end of a ball-pein hammer and bog each hole, but that's a lot of trouble to go to.

Filling the holes with pop rivets is probably a good idea if you don't mind the bumps. If you must, use a paintable sealer not silicon.


As far as dinging & filling.

A centre punch is a little more subtle than a ball pein hammer.

This is how panel beaters do it.

First coarse sand immediately around the hole to bear metal.

Select a centre punch a bit bigger than the hole, & belt ( not too hard not too soft ) to give a small conical recess.

Fill with automotive filler (bog) & sand flush.

You can buy countersink rivets that nearly sit flush with the surface. Easy to fill.
