Default Reciprocal rights with other Forums

As far as I know, it is not against the rules of this Forum to post links to other Woodworking forums; and I cannot see how it could be regarded as detrimental to this forum to do so. However, the American Sawmill Creek forum enforces such a rule. It might be taken as bad manners for an ordinary member of this forum to go on that forum and tell them that their rule is not in the best interests of their members, and that it is patronising for their Forum administrators to try to censor what links their members are exposed to.

But I wonder whether an administrator on this forum could approach their administators and try to negotiate reciprocal rights in the same sort of way as golf clubs do. As it is, I have noticed that several posts by our members have been censored in this way and references to this forum have been replaced by a series of red Xes. I think that Forum is paranoid about spam, but I don't see what they are afraid of about links to this forum; their members are not going to desert them in droves and come here instead.

I once had a look at their website and although the user names are different there are litteraly hundreds of post with the same content. It appears that a lot of there native members post on both sites so its ok for them but as you say not reciprocated.

    What a terrific idea

[edit] Second thoughts they (SMC) wouldnt be in it because all the other forums and various members would see it as a precedent and want in

    Lignum,

I am afraid we are testing their patience a bit already. I am a bit concerned that they may not take kindly to your using multiple aliases there. There seem to be some very straight-laced folk there, who probably cannot appreciate Aussie larrikinism. I think it would be unfortunate if we precipitate a feud with that Forum by stirring them up too much. But it is difficult to avoid stepping out of line when Forums have different rules and different expectations of how members should behave.

I belong to that forum but I wouldn't bother going back. I think they are all too full of themselves and I don't think they allow aliases and it is very dry there.

Maybe that is why we are getting so many yanks on this forum. At least they can express themselves here as long as it is clean.

I think your the one whos a bit out of line here in assuming im using multiple ailiases trying to stir them up. The SMC moderators and numerous members who im in contact with via PM`s know me by my real name. The other alias is no more.

Terry Fogarty the actor or Terry Fogarty the writer?

This business of linking to other forums has been kicked around at SMC for a long time. In the last thread about it, the admins basically said "that's the way it is, take it or leave it."

Maybe a dialogue between admins for both Forums would result in an exception, but frankly, I doubt it.
    Cheers,

Sawmill Creek forum and these forums may have similar questions etc but at the same time are worlds apart.

If you intend to use their forums then you should abide by their rules the same as we expect members of these forums to abide by the rules. Ours are much more relaxed rules but that's the way I set these forums up.

If you wish a more straight laced forum then Sawmill Creek may be for you, however if you wish the freedom to post most things with little fear of intervention and strict moderation then these are the forums to be playing in.

I would not be happy if members of these forums are going to Sawmill Creek forum and telling how wonderful we are and placing links back to here. I would feel it was a little unethical. It wouldn't bother me if Sawmill Creek forum members were to put a link back to their forums on here but that is the nature of these forums.

It does bother me if our members are going there and in the name of these forums are disrespecting their rules.

As for reciprocal rights between forums. Some one had better spell it out for me as I really don't see what you are getting at. Are you wanting us to ask them to change their rules so our members can go to their forums and hijack threads and carry on like idiots the same way as they do here, or is it that you would like us to crack down on the larakins and become more straight laced and anal here just to make them feel at home.

By the way, don't be too sure about their members not deserting them in droves and coming here. After all, where would you rather be playing?

Personally I'd rather be somewhere where I can call myself "Knackers" and have some fun, rather than in a place where my name is "Robert Alluisious Thomas" and I get cracked over the knuckles by the teacher if I dare to get even a little bit out of line.

There is a place for both forums and users should abide by the rules of the one they are using at the time.

    Cheers - Neil

Wonder how much the rules, attitudes and moderations of each forum reflects the society they thrive in as a whole?

I'm sure that stirring the pot would not go down well on SMC.

I believe that SMC was set up to accomodate a group that shared a certain distaste for other forums and the shenannigans that went on.
Frankly, I think they are happy being insular, and leaving the other forums to other people.

Whilst I don't really agree with it... if its the way that they want it, why not let it be? I'm happy being ignored!

It is a very good idea (reciprocal rights)... I just don't think they would accept it.

    And we're glad you did.

I don't think that is actually happening, but I don't know everything (just think I do).

    Please, no.

Can I change my user name?

A great deal, actually. Whilst many Yanks would argue that they have a freewheeling spirit, in actuality our society as a whole is quite straight-laced. Many of our founding fathers and mothers were fleeing persecution of their rather strict religious denominations. That set the tone. Then, the continued influence of the Poms through the Victorian era sort of added to the cultural tendency.

I'm not saying we are a bunch of prudes, just that we have some ingrained cultural differences which are reflected generally in these two Forums.
    Cheers,

    Bob
