Lights Dont Work :(
hi, well today i took of an old light in the kitchen which was going to be replaced and after about 2 hours i turned back the power but none of the lights work now i havn't connected that light back but the wires are covered in electrical tape and i have no lights working but there is power going to the wires and the powerpoints work. What could i have done
( I think i might have connected one of the actives and netural wires together with tape earlier)
p.s. I've checked the fuse box but no problems all is turned off.

My first advise is go to bed for the night and second advise is in the morning ring an electrician because you obviously don't know what you are doing and if you had connected an active to a nuetral there would have been a big bang and remember ONE FLASH and you are ASH.

Shaun,
You have most probably disconnected the main feed when you removed the light fitting. By the sounds of it you don't really know what you are doing. Please do not play with it any more! You may fry yourself or start a fire and at very least, you will mix up the order of the connections if you start trying to put it back together, which will make it harder (=more expensive) for an electrician to work it out for you. Some things are worth tackling yourself with a few tools, a bit of knowledge, some advice and a desire to learn. Electricity is not one of them.

How Long? and could it be faulty.
Few years back i had some electrical work done, now my flood lights(with sensor) out the front don't work at all.
Have only checked one bulb so far, which worked fine in another light fitting. The other bulb is higher than my longest ladder, so has not been checked yet.
Would one blown bulb, stop the whole setup working. They are both wired into the same switch.
How long is electricians work covered against possible faults.... Not saying they are at fault.
HJ0 Cheers ...Please tell me i don't have to get up on my roof to check the bulb.

Hi Shaunm,
Well had the fuse blown or the circuit breaker flicked out?. Or better still did you take the other members advice and get in a "qualified electrician"?

If what shaunm has said is accurate, I would love to be a"fly on the wall" when the sparky calls for this one.
You can't use yellow for anything other than an earth and that's not really legal anyway. (AS3000 3.8.2 conductor colours) So where did the yellow come from?
Hmmmmm me suspects some home wiring maybe the previous owner - not good.
At least shaunm finally accepted the advice to get a sparkyBetter poor than dead

Lights
Have to agree with mark on this one. Sparkies have the know how with all this sort of thing. Besides that it wouldn't be real flash if one of our members was turned to ash.

Shaunm
How many wires have you got coming into your house from the power pole outside?? or how many meters are in your fuse box ??
As said, if it was a 3 phase installation there would have been yellow wire (very old install) but his should have stopped at the circuit fuse with red & black used from the fuse to the lighting system or GPOs______________
