Hope this is the right forum to ask this question.Did a search have not found much.Will people share their storage ideas and pictures .I have to many -it will come in usefull one day- goodies .Looking for movible storage ideas to convert from horizontal to vertical storage .Have to store timber ,long and short.Need to be able to accomodate more benches for the various family interests.
Need to make space ,so i can engage in actual productive work again ,rather than spending most of my time moving stuff .

Sw and article in the famiy handyman mag a while back about storage. In it they lined the inside walls of a shed with plywood. This gave a whole new outlook on how you could use your wall space. I have the mag here some where. I will try to find it and let you know what copy it was so as you may be able to chase it up. Or I can scan it and send to you.

I don't know if this will suit but it is something to think about. My storage issues were large and infrequently used items. I put a large area ("shelf") just above my head height and put everything on that. It largely sits over my bench so is not too big an issue. I used steel posts and channel and the floor is 12mm ply. The finished size was the width of the shed (7.5 mtrs) by 2400 (the length of the sheets). It is really a mezzanine level in a garage and works great. Tall people have to duck but I don't care, it's my garage and suits me.

2nd hand pallet racking - I have about 9+ metres of 60cm wide - 5.5 down one side with a hole for sheetgoods (got to get rount to building a wheeled sled to go in the hole) and about 4 mtrs down the other side, 16mm ply shelves. One level is used as extra workbench, the rest has plastic crates full of stuff. And you can climb on it without it collapsing.

I'm not having any luck chasing up my lost copy of the family handy man mag that had an article on wall mounted storage. it involved lining the walls of the shed or garage with wall mounted shelves and hooks to suit your needs. i was wondering if some one else has a copy the may be able to help forge out with it. i am stumped as to what i have done with my copy.:confused:

Hi forge,
For smaller items, I have built some steel racks, mostly from 25x25x3mm RHS and put weldmesh down as shelves. Make the shelves to suit whatever you have ie. milk crates, a certain size of plastic tub, or even 20l square metal drums (which I'm doing at present: cutting the tops off like the old kero tin furniture). Change the spacings to suit different containers or lengths of timber/metal.
I also have a cabinet fitted to take a stack of core sample boxes (ex geology dept.) which are tray-like boxes with dividers...ideal for small lengths of dowel, mouldings, threaded bar etc.
My main wood storage is a number of old farm gates, layed flat one above the other, and welded in the centres to three large diameter pipes, which go from floor to ceiling. Access is from both sides.
You can never have enough storage!

Thanks for that Wendy I have no idea where my copy has gotten to. The annoying thing I was looking at the project to do my shed the same way.

I built 2 of these rolling garage organisers a few years ago and they are simply perfect for my small area. They are compact but have a huge storage capacity and can roll out of the way when extra work space is needed. I sort of adapted the plans to my own dimensions and just built them out of 18mm MDF.

Watched the guy make this on streaming video on the Woodworking channel. Went through the whole process. And at the end when they were all finished, he showed the viewers how he'd used the space to store his tools and clamps and sandpaper - et al. . .
