Painting new villaboard ...
What preparation is needed to paint new villaboard - does it need to be washed down first? What sort of sealer if any is needed before the first coat of paint goes on ?

Hi benchtopproblem.
I am not a painter, they may have better advice, but I see no one has answered your post, so here is what I would do.
Washing down would not be a good idea as you will get the top coat on the joins wet and they will need sanding again if marked.
I would dust remove excess dust with a broom, or the like, then seal with a normal plasterboard sealer first.
Cheers
