Worst take away in Australia
Thanks to Cam for this one after my shot at Seattle, but I have a few bad memories.
Mt Beauty Vic:
Had the crappiest souvlaki ever, folded up in the Pittes was the vilest sloppiest salty concoction I had ever tried.
Wound up putting it in the dog bowl, she would eat anything, but not this, even the flies kept away.
Deniliquin NSW:
A takeaway on the main street were offering souvlaki, the woman serving said they had just discovered them (this was about 15 years ago) so I ordered 2 (1 for SWMBO).
Drove out of town and had our traditional souvlaki compleete with beef, lettuce, onion, tomato sauce, coleslaw and beetroot.
Actually wasn't that bad, just not what I was expecting.
Hopetoun Vic.
Not food but accomodation, stayed in the only motel in town, paid my money to some crusty old girl who was too old for the CWA and went to my room.
Had a single bed, now I havn't slept in a single for many moons and I like to spread out a bit, there is 6'4" of me so I went back and asked if there was a double available, Madame Crusty responded 'yer expecten company?'
Never went back there.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Worst "food"
Eagle Take Away in New Norfolk, Tasmania.
If the Japanese found out about this place they wouldn't need to hunt whales for blubber... I reckon each chip was about 50% fat and the oil probably hadn't been changed since the place was built.
Worst "accommodation"
Can't remember its name, Vienna, Austria (the one without kangaroos)
This place was so seedy that it was unbelievable... Our accommodation booking had been "lost" and so we had to go and find a new place to stay. One of the places we looked was this hotel. It seriously looked like a set for a Hollywood dive. I have never seen anything like it before!
Slowest elevator (strange one but worth mentioning).
Explorer Inn, Melbourne
You can seriously carry on entire phone conversation between the bottom floor and the 2nd floor. How do I know? I tried. It is the slowest elevator by a mile I have ever seen. Worth a look if you live in Melbourne (nearish the Convention Centre)... It is truly amazing.<Insert witty remark here>

SWMBO and I got some takeawy from a shop in Warwick QLD (now closed). Two Hawian Packs in the little cardboard boxes. By the time we got home (5 minutes) we went to get the boxes out of the plastic bag and the bottms of each box fell out due the cardboard being soaked in the excess oil. The chips weren't cooked properly and literally dripped oil.
Have a nice day - Cheers

As opposed to best takeaway/cafe type setup. The Paragon in the main street of Goulburn is a great place for a decent feed. Doesnt add that much to the trip, especially if your already stopping at Maccas etc. Also, and someone can correct me on this, there is an old style cafe in the main street of Queanbeyan which serves monster servings of good food. Chicken Kiev is two Kievs for example etc.
And in a similar vein, for the best accommodation try the little motel on the South Side of Gundagai next to the BP servo. Fantactically appointed motel, with big rooms and comfy beds - $80 a night.

Just jumpin to the defence of maccas
When your travelling with kids on a long trip maccas is great for the following;
1. Clean toilets
2. Okay coffee (mccafe)
3. Kids will eat what they get
4. Salads plus menu is healthy
5. Playground for the kids to get excercise
6. You know EXACTLY what you are getting.
We made a conscious decision to try local places when travelling a few years ago and gave them up as a bad joke. Worst I had was a takeaway and asked for a burger with the lot.
Ill have to cook it mate.
No worries I can wait.
Why not have one of these ones ( wrapped in plastic in bain maree)
Ahhhhh, no thanks, Ill wait.
Grab burger and drive down the road to find a sausage mince patty and lettuce.
Back to the arches

Yeah, gotta agree with Dazz. Macca's are shockin', but they are reliably shockin'.
I have had plenty of takeways that make Maccas or KFC look great.
Cam
p.s. Has anyone ever tried scraping the sauce off a Maccas burger then eating what's left. The sauce has all the taste, the rest of it is extremely tasteless - a bit worrying really.<Insert witty remark here>

There is a chippy in Whittlesea that I used to frequent a lot.
Last time we got food there was a Sunday night for tea.
I ordered Whitting, the fish was way under cooked and was like rubber, next day I called in to have a quiet word with the bloke about the fish, not wanting to make too big a fuss I waited until the shop was empty.
When I explained how the fish was not cooked, the dill accused me of ordering the wrong Whitting?
Apparently the crap he serves as Whitting is some sort of cat fish from Vietnam.
I was told I should have ordered King George Whitting to get the propper fish?
That was 6 months ago and havent been back since.

There used to be a place in Canberra where you could get "Chinese" at 2am. It was called Shanghai Charlies and served the worst kind of slop imaginable. It took us a while to realise that he opened at 11pm and closed at 3am for a good reason - the drunks were his only customers.
(yeah, I was a regular)

Once in Echuca ordered a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich for the vegetarian 2nd in charge. They were cooking thin snags on a sandwich maker opened up. Took the snags off and ate them in front of me dipping them in sauce and put the sandwich in the toaster and closed the lid.
Worst part about it after I explained to the vegetarian was I had to eat it and she was still complaining about being hungry.
Can't win!!

Ten years ago at a Fish and Chips shop in Coffs Harbour - scallops were advertised scallops were ordered and I got potato cakes.
Ok I'm a Mexican but I do know that most NSW people call potato cakes "potato scallops" not just "scallops". I have no idea how you would order scallops from him.- Wood Borer
