Domain hosting?

Hi guys.

I am thinking of doing a website in the near future.
How much band width would I require to have?

The site will be about the Victorian Goldrush of the 1850's with pictures, links etc.

Its been a passion of mine for a while, I even started doing the ground work some time ago, but some IT dill formated my hard drive on me for some reason?:eek:

For a Victorian Goldrush website, no offense, but not very much! Remember same rules as here though, keep the piccys down to a reasonable size.

If you want to get a domain name, register somewhere like dotster.com (you'll get a .info address for $2.95 US for the first year) and pay $5.00 per year for "masked" URL forwarding.

That way, you can use your freebie site provided by your ISP, and if the bandwidth starts to be exceeded, you can pay for a better service while keeping the same URL! (Just direct it to another site)

You can also use the service to tack on subdomains (no additional cost) like Echidna does, for instance www.ozwinner.com could have the subdomain www.gladI'mnotsillyas.ozwinner.com

Wander through Michael Storer's pages http://www.ozemail.com.au/~storerm for an example. A lot of pages, mostly text though, reasonably high traffic for a typical "non commercial" type site, and nowhere near the limit.

You can check out the stats for the site by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the home page, typically about 500 page loads per day.

My Goat Island Skiff Pages are a bit more graphic-rich, but the six-year average on them is less than 150 visits per week, so again unless you become king of the blogs, I doubt that you'll get run off your server too quickly!

A couple of points if I may...

* The cheapest plan at dreamhost will get you more bandwidth or space than you are likely to use.

* A US domain name registered in the US instead of via the Aussie MelbourneIT registrar will save buckets. I think we paid US$9.95/yr for our domain compared with AU$150/2 years with MelbourneIT. I see the base dreamhost package seems to include a domain registration.


* If your domain is going to be very small, you might be able to host it in your personal webspace at your ISP if they offer the service. In any case, A US domain (ozwinner.com instead of ozwinner.com.au) will be a lot cheaper.

I second the recommendation of dreamhost. You should be able to stick any domain you like on it and you simply will not find better value for money anywhere. You even get a free domain for 12 months (.com, .net, etc). I have used many hosts including myself but dreamhost are unbeatable for 99.9% of us.

It is possible to get 12 months hosting for US$22.40 through them (pm me or email [email protected] and I will point you to how)

Also, don't think that you have to have an Australian host for an .au domain. You can host .au anywhere. You just point to the name server from the registrar. Hosting is always going to be better value in the US

Twice in the last 2 hours I have tryed Dreamhost.
Twice they have had almost no icons visable with most showing x.
So they dont fill me with confidence.

They are also one of the slowest loading sites Ive visited for a while.

I would rather pay a little more money and know the webpage is going to be viewable.

Don't get me started on why it costs about 5 times as much to register a .au domain as a plain old .com domain. Seems we free-trading aussies have got some sort of local Monopoly setup on the business. :eek:

Unless you have a good commercial reason to have a .au domain, I don't think it's worth supporting that monopoly. They are just playing on misplaced patriotism in my opinion.

Sean's right, I think you can host a .au domain on a US host.

The .id domain is for individuals.

If I wanted to have a site I could use www.dogbreath.id.au

I would go the .com domain. Something like www.goldfieldsvictoria.com

In case you are not aware of it, to be eligible for a ".com.au" domain, you need an ABN and/or registered business name. There's no such requirement for ".com"

I have no experience with them but have been recommended to http://www.netregistry.com.au/

They do domain names: .com.au for $44.95 for 2 years and .com for $39.90 for 2 years. They also do web hosting from $15.95 per month. (100mb storage and 5gb traffic) - presumably without annoying advertising pop-ups, etc. that usually come with free web hosting.
