Timing out

Anyone else getting timed out connecting here? I hit a wall this time last night and again tonight for about 30 mins.:confused:

I think something's changed on the site. I keep getting these interim messages " your search/request is proceeding. please hit this button of nothing happens etc etc"

Never seen this before so I presume the IT experts have done an upgrade to the site?

It seems much slower.

Yep, I keep getting the messages too, after every post. And it is a lot slower.

I think the backup process could have been causing the time outs. They start at 8:45pm and finish at between 9:15 and 9:25pm. They run every second night (last night....not tonight etc..). I'll set them to run at 2am and see how it goes.

It's not bad, and I'm not complaining, but whenever I click the 'new Posts' button, I'm now seeing the 'search in progress' screen and 'thank you for your patience'

Maybe the search is taking longer, and the DB is slowing down or something. I know some systems have those dialogs only show if the search takes longer than a certain time.

Searching is a real problem on any large forum. I've removed the redirects, I thought they might be a good idea because they add a little pause between some page loads and *may* have dropped server load. I'm not sure they helped much tho.

The quickest way to post is to click the icon next to the post you want to reply to and use the quick reply box (it doesnt even require a single page load)

Thanks Steve, I'll trying posting per your suggestion.

It may just be that the interim screen makes posts seem to take longer

Hmm. well, couple of observations if I may.

I think a lot of people are using the 'New Posts' function (certainly, I had never noticed it until someone mentioned it in a post) and it does a search and returns a bunch of recent posts as far as I can tell.

Maybe it would be quicker if writing a post updated a new posts list, and that was what is retrieved by the 'New Posts' link.

If you take a look at who is connected you will find a whole heap of spiders (Google and Yahoo) which must be putting quite a load on.

Yeah searching is a struggle because of the size of the database.

Size: about 1.5GB
No. of records: 7,120,403
