    Default Aircon problems

During the recent balmy weather our aircon decided it was time for time out.
It is a 3 1/2hp split system and there was ice on the fitting at the compreesor end on the smaller of the two pipes, inside one half of the condensor (is that what it's called) iced up and blasted out cold air while the other half pumped warm air.
I looked in troubleshooting guides and could not find any explanation, could it just be the exceptional weather, the cars aircons are working OK just the home unit.
The compressor sits halfway up an external wall and is in the sun, don't know if this is part of the problem.
Want to get this fixed before the next blast promised on Thursday if I can.

Sounds like it could be lack of Gas , somewear on the outside unit there should be a round sight glass ,on the smaller line maybe with a plastic cap , that you may be able to see if there's liquid , or bubbles , should be liquid passing through.

Sorry for the delay, thanks for the advice, I am hoping that is all it is.
The unit was put in two years ago pre charged, I suspect that it may have been light on when it was fitted.
Mr Aircon is coming round tonight for a look and a charge if neccessary, quoted $100 for a top up, don't know if thats reasonable or not.

    Hi Iain,

How hot do you need to be for it to be worth $100

Going rate for a car top up is around that price, so for a housecall topup it sounds reasonable to me.

Aircon man arrived lastnight, gas pressure was negative, not good I believe, tightened up a loose fitting and squirted in some r22, it's only 2 years old I thought it would have used the new one.
System now runs cold again in time for tomorrow.
$50 cash and about 15 minutes.
