Where to start
Where should I go to get started on the pros, cons and methods of different finishes.
I have heard that estapol like varnishes are not good for the long term life of furniture? Is this true?

Andraax,
Neil who kindly runs this Bulletin Board has the best book on the subject of finishing. Buy it and I think all your questions will answered.

The sponsors web site would be a good first move. It covers, waxes, shellacs, etc and has a decent blog
Re the Estapols, I think these finshes are hard to restore without sanding back. The finish will deteriorate over a few years and need re-doing. Thats my experience at least.Bodgy

Take a leisurly stroll through the "Woodwork Pics" section of the forum and you should be able to see what some of the finishes look like on a variety of timbers, most of the pics also have a description of how the owner did the finish and the materials used.
I sneak a peek in there when I am in need of some inspiration.
For "Inspiration", read "pinch someone else's good idea".
