Shed chairs to house chairs
Not much content, just a few pictures.
Pulled a couple of cedar chairs out of the shed that had been there for decades. Now's a good a time as any to fix them up.
Chair one.

Apart from the normal wrecked sliding dovetails and nails in every joint, the first chairs' biggest issue was white paint in the grain.

Lots of scrubbing with stripper and metho got rid of most of it.
This chair can come inside now.

Chair two.
Lovely isn't it ...

Here's the typical smashed sliding dovetails.

And here it is all in bits.
Note the amount of hardware that was extracted from the chair.

I'll make a solid cedar seat and fit the back next.
Here's where I'm up to ...

I'll post the after pics when done.
Stay safe all,
Stu

Nice work Stu.
I have two chairs like this that belonged to my grandfather.
One was in pieces with the back leg of one in two pieces.
Sorted them out though and they are in daily use.
From memory they're called Spade back chairs. Or spade back cottage chairs.

Built up the male part of the chair leg.
Tweaked it to fit (gratuitous pic off my new (old) skew block plane )

All glued up.

The seat has been roughed out.
I'll shape the molding when the seat frame is together.
I used old boards from long forgotten furniture and jointed them.
Sunny side up.

The whole chair comes together next.
I'll make some new corner blocks and just nail the seat on.

One last WIP pic ...
Shaping the seat edges.

And the finished chair.
Polished and waxed.
Tonight is the first time it's been inside any house for close to 40 years.

Sadly (I like these chairs ), I'll probably list these two for sale as I don't have any room.
I just wanted them back into service and appreciated by somebody.
Keep an eye out in the classifieds on this forum.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
Stu
