Sites for Handplane informtion: general info, dating etc.
There are a few very useful sites for handplane information that have become a bit tricky to find, so I thought it might be convenient to stick a selection up here. Anyone can post with a site they think ought to be included and I'll add it to the list. After adding the site, I'll delete the suggestion post, & keep this as a single-post thread.
First cab off the rank is UK Allf's archived site for combination planes.
Stanley Stuff:
Many of you will have Patrick Leach's "Blood & Gore" site for Stanley planes bookmarked, but here it is, anyway.
Rex Mill's type study for dating Stanley planes.
Another flow-chart for dating US Stanleys
And another
And a 'user-friendly' Stanley plane dating site
For a 'local' slant on Stanley planes, see Hans Brunner's site
For dating U.K. Stanleys, try here.
Some useful info on plane sizes & weights, screw sizes, taps & dies here. This site also has links to two articles from the TTTG giving lots of history & background on screw threads generally & why Stanley threads are so "odd".
(edit): To make it easier, here are the links: Part 1; Part 2
Record stuff:
And for Record lovers who want to know when their planes were manufactured....
And this site for more info, history, etc.
Other brands:
WS planes
Woden planes

Good thread Ian
I rely heavily on old catalogues for information. Whilst this site is general, The International Tool Catalogue Library is a useful reference> The search engine is bit strange, but this, for example was brought up by "Stanley Tools." Just "Stanley" seemed to focus on Stanley Holloway!
https://archive.org/search.php?query=Stanley%20tools
and this for "Record Tools" (includes Marples)
https://archive.org/search.php?query...d+Tools&page=2
You may have to register to participate, but there is no charge and no issues that I have encountered.

Millers Falls https://oldtoolheaven.com/bench/bench.htm This link goes to their handplane sub-section ('cause you've called this "Sites for Handplane information..." not Handtool info), but if you go back to the home page you can navigate to their Braces; Hand Drills; Breast Drills; & Push Drills. And a section on Goodall-Pratt handtools.
Georges Basement https://www.georgesbasement.com/ An "interesting" site, but full of bits and pieces of interest to fanatics (like me ), including Yankee drills and Yankee braces (but also some planes - just to stay on topic).
WS Tools https:Welcome To The WS Tools Birmingham Site - WS Tools Birmingham The ONLY site for followers of WS Planes and spokeshaves.
Woden Planes Home For the Woden (Steel Nut) and Woden (Record) fans.

Vann, I have added all your suggestions except the George's Basement site. I took a look at it & made an executive decision not to include it atm because although it's got lots of info, it's not all or mostly about planes, and not easy (well, not for me) to find anything specific. I want to maintain the focus on planes for the moment, as per the thread title. Once we've built a good selection of sites, perhaps I can add a secondary list of sites where you'll need to search through to glean what you may be after.
Ditto for your suggestions Paul. However, I'm leaving both posts up for now, in case I'm over-ruled by the rest of you (I'm a democrat, not a despot! ). In fact, I think I'll recant and not delete any subsequent posts (unless they are very rude!), because some discussion will always be helpful. As long as I keep the first post updated and all the relevant sites there, it should remain fairly compact & easy to find what you may be looking for...
Cheers,IW

Thank you Ian for setting up this thread, and stickying it. It's a bit hard sometimes to find resources for this sort of thing.
I found this site some time ago: https://woodandshop.com/identify-sta...ge-type-study/
Useful for the USA made Stanleys, though I will say at the outset I have no way of confirming how accurate it is.

Well, for the sake of broad coverage, I'll check them out & add them. I guess the message with any key is you have to use them with care to get to the right destination. I've just been using a botanical key to work out which species of Acacia grow on & around our place & got thoroughly lost several times!

I’m a bit of a Luddite on these sites having Sellens, Walter etc prefer a book in my hands.
Having said that Hans Brunners site has ‘Stanley Planes by Number’ which is worth a look.
If you have a hankering to see these tools in the flesh drop into a tool sale here in Sydney or Melbourne.
