Bought this yesterday and I would like to recondition and use. The wood appears to be pine. My friend has told me it is a reproduction (so I won't dither around being so precious when working on it.) I have to replace a leg and temporarily it my be a shaped pine block.

I was thinking that maybe I could clean and then oil. If I wet this way is there a need to fill the cracks?
