This happened when one of my sons was about five years old.

His mother called him. He did not respond.

She called him again, still no answer.

She went to the start of the hallway, knowing he was in his room and called again. No reply.

She stood in the doorway to his room where she could see him and called his name. He responded "Yes Mum".

Mum asked "Why didn't you answer when I called you before?"

"I didn't hear you the first three times."
