Teenage Communication
Our 15-year-old son asked me to drive him to his friend's house.
Once we were in the car and several minutes had passed in silence, I
attempted to open the lines of communication.
"Did you have a nice day at school?"
"Yep."
"Any homework to do?"
"Nope."
"You got your hair cut"
"Yep."
"This is a monosyllabic conversation isn't it?"
"Yep."
"You do know what monosyllabic means?"
"Yep."
"Well, tell me." Aha, I thought, now he has to give me a dictionary
explanation.
With a mischievous grin and a sly look at me, he replied, "One."

Forgive your enemies, but never, ever forget their names.
The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naïve forgive and forget; the wise forgive but never forget.

my teenager has occasionally -- when directed to reply in sentences containing at least 5 words -- spoken in sentences containing exactly 5 words!

Yes, I can remember having similar conversations with my parents. When my mother saw me attempting to straighten out my then 5 year old son, she commented that "you get the children you deserve".
She was right (mostly).

You need sales techniques. Open and closed questions.
My son was the same (well, still is), so it's "so, how was your ignorance reduced today" (I.e. what did you learn)... He answers "stuff"... I ask "what stuff, specifically"... And so it goes.

Dammit. Ya beat me to it Skew. I have LOVED this song for ages and whenever I'm around a teenager and start getting "those" answers I start singing it to them...and following them around still singing it...then sit on their chests staring deeply into their eyes and continue singing just to drive the point home.
The lesson might not be learned, but damn it's good funEvery time you make a typo, the errorists win.
