    But where's the option for people like me who use a true life photo of themselves as their avatar ? We have no option to choose from.

    (or should that be...no option from which to choose) - see I can write proper when I want.

    Truth or falsity of avatar is beside the point. Your avatar happens to be a true representation, but is still non-animated (unless you count the mysterious appearances and disappearances of the hat to get washed).

    I too have a true life photo of myself.

    I don't mind the animated avatars. If someone doesn't like them they can turn off the animation in IE if they want.
