    Default Hello folks

I just came across this forum and read through Adrieke's thread about the stage coach build. Now I'm interested. )

I've been building the Artesania Latina "Scottish Maid 1839" kit for the last year or so, and I completed the project a week or two ago. Well, almost complete - I still have to build a base and display case for the model. Unfortunately I had a burglar in my workshop a couple of weeks ago, and he stole ALL my power tools. Still waiting for the insurance company to cough up so that I can start replacing that lot and complete that project.

Anyway, I came across the Stage Coach kit for AL a couple of days ago, and of course couldn't resist! I have just started building it - first back wheel is assembled, spokes and all. I found this to be quite a fiddly job, firstly because the end grain of the curved wheel rim pieces keep soaking up the glue and won't stick together, secondly getting the whole thing round and the hub centered. My effort isn't perfect, but it's pretty close, and the wheel runs more or less true when I spin it on a pin inserted into the hole in the hub.

I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I think I'll do that, and post them, if you folks are interested. )

A bit about me, for those that are interested....I live in a small, one-horse town in the north-eastern part of South Africa. I co-own a joinery shop that manufacturers built in cupboards and all sorts of other custom made articles and fittings, and I have been into the woodworking thing for quite a few years, in my spare time. Only recently started the modelling thing, so I'm still learning the ropes there. But the general woodworking experience that I do have certainly helps a lot - things work much the same whether you're building furniture or a ship model, it's just the scale that differs a bit! )

One question I do have at this stage: I was a bit perturbed to see a comment somewhere that "CA glue only lasts about 5 years". I assume "CA" stands for cyanoacrylate, i.e. super glue? I used a fair bit of that putting together my "Scottish Maid" and I don't relish the thing falling apart in a few years! Any recommendations as to something better I could use?

Ok, that's it for now. I'll keep you folks posted. Let me know if you're interested to see pics and hear about the work in progress! )

    Welcome to the forum.

It is great to hear that you have been inspired to create something. After all the majority of members are hobbyist and building something is relaxing.

It would be great to see your last build even as you say not completely finished with the base and display case.

You could post in the model sub-section of the forum.
