It looks like one of the folding bizzos found in the pyramids that were used instead of pillows to rest one's head on while sleeping.

It looks like a carved wooden folding stool; but it also doesn't look big enough; I wish there was some idea of scale...

What ever it is it unfolds and locks into a "X" pattern; now we just have to figure out does it stand up or lay down on it's side?

With the rectangular base becoming the top when the X is opened - a folding stool from a Japanese bath house.

Didn't look close enough to realise it was wood.
So I now think it is a head rest, maybe Japanese.
