HEADSTOCK SPINDLE and BANJO for woodlathe
i am making a bowl lathe and am looking for a headstock spindle,just a shaft with a thread on one end for chuck,with a morse taper,that i will get some bearings and bearing housings ,and pulley then mount to the top of my lathe,also after a banjo i can modify to use as well........bob will pickup or pay postage, thankyou in advance

Hi,
If you have no luck with finding a spindle, i could make you one. I just did one for someone else as his did not have a morse taper, just a threaded nose.

thankyou so much ,what would i be looking at to make me one about 300mm long ,thread on the end and morse taper,doesnt have to be hollow all the way through, just enough to put a centre in sometimes ,and possibly a keyway ,
i can then then get bearings/pulley/bearing carriers and bolt to the top of the tower,please include postage to 4511 queensland .thanks again....bob

robyn2839 I would be inclined to put a hole through the head stock shaft, because there will be times that you will want to remove the mandrel or drive.
It would be easier to put it in now rather that later.

Robyn, you really need a hole all the way through the spindle shaft if you intend putting morse taper chucks etc on the spindle of a bowl lathe. The hole lets you use a threaded rod drawbar from the back of the male morse taper (which must have a threaded hole) through to the back of the shaft. This holds the chuck or whatever in place as you don't have a tailstock on your bowl lathe to prevent the morse taper from coming out on it's own . Google lathe or collet drawbar to get an explanation of it's use.

just want a shaft with a m30 thread and flange one end, key way the other end ,if i cant get a bearing like the one in the diagram i will use a fixed bearing on the thread end and then perhaps a tapered roller bearing on the other end , then the step pulley ,dont want Morse taper now as i wont need it ,only faceplates and chucks for what i want to turn....bob

Hi Kryn,
The cost of a one off spindle in 4140 (chrome moly) steel 300mm long with threaded nose, bearing and pulley registers etc would be $110. The more i make though the cheaper they will be, provided they are mostly the same, i'm guessing depending on members other lathes there will be different nose threads required.

I spoke to Rod today, we agreed that using a 6206 bearing (30x62x16, deep groove) would be the way to go. With a couple of flange mounted carriers like this NEW 4 Bolt Flange Bearing Housing 62mm | eBay they should make a decent head. Rod is looking into pulleys.

could you make me this spindle,and price please, my neighbour will make the bearing block and step pulley for me,whatever the shaft size, so that makes it a lot easier.......bob
