kitchen benchtop - getting down to the final decision
Hi all, I've made a vic ash kitchen benchtop, and can't make up my mind about the finish.
The problem is, I want the best of both worlds:
1. a foodsafe oil finish that's easy to apply and maintain with touchups
AND
2. a hard, smooth surface that's easy to wipe clean (but I don't want to use polyurethane)
Can anyone tell me which (if any) of these will give me the hard, smooth surface without resorting to poly or burnishing oil (which seems tricky to apply properly)...
- Feast Watson kitchen timber oil,
- Rustins worktop oil
- Organoil woodwipe
- Osmo top oil
- Osmo polyx satin (leaning towards this mix of oil and wax, seems to be what I'm looking for)
- Any other oil/wax blend that's food safe?
I've discarded Kunos Countertop Oil because it promises a "natural wood touch and feel" - NOT what I want.

The boss finished his kitchen bench (NZ Kauri) in tung oil, Feast Watson I think, and it looks great. He built the oil up in 4 coats and it's been very durable; not a hard process, just time consuming to do it properly. You can see that it's a fairly thick layer on top of the timber, looks and feels almost like poly.

Good Morning Leisadent
In about 1983-84 I put in a celery top pine kitchen benchtop in a previous house. Also made a CTP desk top at the same time. Both were finished with three coats of Danish Oil. Both are still going well.
The present owner of that house advises that he re-oils the benchtop every 4 or 5 years.
I have not done anything to the desk top. Top is a bit dented, but still glossy - after almost 30 years!
