Promotional Gimmick
I would like to take the credit for sharing this, but I can't. It was sent to me by Forum member Crowie.
"The Writer" was made almost 250 years ago by Pierre Jaquet-Droz as a gimmick to promote his Swiss watchmaking business. He made a couple of other machines too, but this was the most complex.
The Writer Automaton
Full credit to Crowie for bringing this to our attention. Absolutely amazing.

Astonishing, how anyone could have the ability to firstly plan and design and then actually build and get the mechanics of it perfect so it worked is beyond me.

Truly amazing piece of machinery.
How it was thought out and constructed is brilliant, even the boy's eyes follow the writing.
Thanks for that, Bushmiller & Crowie.

Let's see someone make one of those on a CNC machine.

... and it still works 240 years later.
Amazing.
