van Dyke crystals

I am in the process of laying an Oak floor on raised timber. The house has all wood floors and I have been told that the floors have been stained using van Dyke crystals - water based stain from an organic source - walnut.

The floors are mostly varnished, however, this particular floor must be finished in wax or Danish Oil. I've done a quick test of the durability of the oak and a van Dyke solution and I must say it has a fantastic look - a deep red/brown - perfect for what I want except there was a lightening of the stained oak.

Now the obvious problem here is going to be liquid spills on a floor that has a water soluble stain. Can anyone advise me here.

I have used Van Dyk Crystles on New parts for antique furniture then used french polish to finish, once the crystal solution is sealed it keeps its colour. You should think about coating the floor in some hard finish then waxing if you want the look.
