Best way to get cooking oil stain out of wood?
Hi All,
Before edging and coating it, I fitted a rimu veneer door for the pantry in the kitchen, and foolishly left the door hanging for a few days (didn't finish the job ASAP!). In that time, someone splashed cooking oil onto the naked door.
To match the rest of the kitchen, I need to coat it with:
a) Mirotone spirit-based wiping stain (dark reddish brown colour, similar to Jarrah color)
b) Mirotone PU 5555 2-pack polyurethane
If I can neutralise any reaction with the residual cooking oil, and get more of it out, the marking will likely be unnoticeable (or at least acceptable), given the dark stain going over it.
Remembering that it's veneer - so aggressive sanding down is out - what's the best way of getting the oil out?
Thanks

How much darker than the natural colour is the oiled splashed part of the door ?
Do you have a photo or two ?

Pete , the oil spotting could almost blend in with the grain . With the dark stain it may not show at all .
If you have an offcut with that veneer on , flick some oil on to it , leave it for a few days , give the whole piece a wipe over with thinners , just as you would with the door , and stain it , and then apply the polyurethane to it.
See if the cooking oil shows up .
I hazard a guess that it won't .
