    does anyne know what wood this is??? its quite a reddy colour. it has walnut drawers that fit into it if that helps anything???

    Regrettably it is really hard to tell from the photos, and given I can't see the feet/base of the chest a little difficult to age the chest. At a guess, it could be cedar ?? though perhaps not. The alternative is possibly some type of pine, I doubt mahogany. Perhaps if you wetted the surface down with some metho and then quickly too a phloto so that we could see the grain that might help to identify the wood.

    Nice project though to work on. Hope you are going to give it a shellac and wax finish.

    yeh i was surprised! there was a dark varnish over it all so i stripped it and found the draws were walnut. I actually was given it by my next door neighbour, its my first furniture project so any tips woulkd be really appreciated! been doing carpentry for 5 years but only site work not quite like this. theres a coupla more pics i love the draws.

    The drawer fronts look like veneers 'cos the grain pattern is so similar.

    Question

    yeh i think they are but think its a really nice piece especially considering it has cost nothing so far, what sort of varnish or wax would anyone suggest???
