Default Constant smell of BBQ sauce

Back in 2002 I lost my sense of smell for quite a few weeks from working with MDF. Everything tasted bad, especially beer, although SWMBO said that how the beer I usually drink really tastes

Anyway since then I have avoided using MDF or used a respirator. Last Thursday I was working on another project with my son and cut up some 700 x 1400 mm MDF panels with a table saw and then sanded the edges outside the shed but didn't use a respirator. Since then I have the smell of smokey BBQ sauce constantly in my nose (even at work some kms away), the smell is only just now beginning to fade.

I read on a few places on the web that anyone constantly smelling smoke is showing a sign of increased chemical sensitivity often arising from use of perfumed detergents etc, but BBQ sauce?

    Anyone else experienced this?

I have seen loss of sense of smell listed on one MDF MSDS. Usually they say something more general like " can lead to sever nasal irritation"

Might not be related to the MDF problem, but according to my incomplete understanding, sense of smell is like keyholes accepting keys. When all the keyholes are filled, the sense of smell diminishes. BTDT with other things.

The various Australian MSDS's for MDF all seem light on in comparison to OS equivalents.

Do we have a lower standard??

Based on the various OS MSDS's I would not work with MDF material unless I have a respirator, in or outside of a building.

    Default MDF Dust.

    Hi BobL,
Not trying to be a smarty, but why use MDF anyway.
I have never had a smelling sense, ever since I can remember.
Bit of a nuisance, but there is nothing I can do about it.
Pretty good though when somebody passes wind.
I have trouble with Blackwood, so I just don't use it. There are plenty of other woods to use

I agree nd tend to avoid the stuff where ever possible. This was for a project driven by my son. Given his previous lack of interest in wood work I was so pleased that he wanted to even work with his old man in the first place.

The first project we did together in years was last september when we made this model paint pot stand.

Now we are making the monster 700 x 1400 mm playing board/case for the miniatures.
Here's the base. The frame is jarrah and yes we could have used ply!

The playing board is also made of MDF and sits inside this case. The board is hinged so the accessories fit underneath the playing board. The lid is like a giant pencil case, ie slides in

Given how I am legally deaf and wear glasses, and how much I like beer, coffee and wine I'd rather keep my sense of smell, I'll continue to avoid it or using my respirator from now on.

This has got me worried from another angle. What are they putting in barbeque sauce?

Interesting how you have that type of smell.

I do not use this type of material much or at all, but do have some lenghts that I am not sure on what to make yet. I will keep this in mind.

The smell has gone, except when I look at a piece of MDF then I think I can smell it for an instant but if I stop and think about it, it's not there.

One medication I take tastes like something I just can't place. Then its gone. I'll never work out what it is. Its a nicer taste than BBQ sauce though.

But ya kknwo , I reckon MDF does smell a bit "toasty".

The stuff I used had me looking under my boots all the time until the job was finished and I sealed it.
