I have a bearer which supports a small upstairs verandah that is rotting at one end and needs replaced. It is obviously outside but not totally exposed. The end which has rotted faces the south and assume that poor paint and rain have caused rotting. The beam is 5.5 metres long and single span. Is has been bolted directly to a plate welded to the steel posts at each end. The 3 coach bolts have split to the ends and may be too close to the end. First question: If I went for a Hynes laminated beam as a replacement which 'model' do I go for. Any other thoughts on best replacement. Unit is cose to beach on Sunshine Coast. Also, for a beam this size how close to the ends can the bolt holes be?
