Default how do you tint clear poly?

    hello,

was hoping someone could help explain how to tint clear polyeurathane...i just want it a little darker (want to add a little black maybe?)

I have a piece of furniture (sadly pine) that i have stained to a nice cedar colour and has come up well, however i would like the finished product to be darker, without adding more coats of stain and ultimately making it look like paint

    any help would be appreciated
    thanks

If the same manufacturer makes both the stain and the poly, they may be compatible. Their technical services rep can advise (check for toll-free contact). I did something like this several years ago, and IIRC there was a recommended limit on dilution. In any case, after establishing feasibility, test for appearance before proceeding.

    Cheers,
    Joe

Feast Watson Prooftint has worked for me (with MInwax Wipe-On Poly). The small (cheap) bottles are economical for smaller projects 'cos you don't need to use much.

Any oil based stain will work in oil based polyU and any water based stain will work in water based polyU.

I just go to the paint shop with a few small containers (small spice jars) and just get the tints I need for about $2 a hit. They use them to tint water based and enamel paints ... it works.
