Bench Vice - jumps thread.
I have an old Record bench vice that I want to install into my new bench, but while checking its action today, I noticed it has a propensity for jumping its screw thread when trying to wind the jaw inwards. Consequently it's almost impossible to wind it closed. Is this an inherent thing with these vices or is there something awry with this particular one?
I partly dismantled it to see if there was anything obviously wrong, but all seemed ok.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

It looks like it's a quick release Bob? If that's the case then that is the problem, I'd say. I have a Groz QR which looks to be modelled on your style, and when pushing it closed if the the gizmo happens to land at the top of the thread (i.e. in between) then when tightened it will quick release open and drop the job on the floor. I just have to be wary and support the job until it the mechanism bites properly in the thread.
In my case not fatally flawed, but a real PITA and I would never buy another.

My older bench has a chineese copy of that vice and it also jumps open if not kept clean. Even clean I still hold the release leaver over to closed as I thghten the work to prevent it jumping open.
I would suggest you strip that one down and give it a good clean up then see how it goes. Pay attention to the spring being able to keep the nut on the thread. If the spring can do its job and there is not too much ware on thread and nut it should be workable.

John

Thanks guys. Yes it does seem to have something to do with the quick release mechanism. I have another vice with the same features which is fitted to another bench, and it too sometimes skips a bit although it does close whereas this other one won't.
I had dismantled it a little yesterday, but maybe a full tear down seems to be in order.
I would like to fit this vice to my new bench, but I have to gt it up to par before going to the trouble of getting it to fit.
Cheers,
Bob
