Renovating a Californian Bungalow (1920's) that has a front veranda with the veranda roof supported by brick piers.

As part of our approved DA and CC we are replacing the upper portion (approx 1/3) of the brick piers with timber posts.

That part is straight forward.

However - I am struggling to come to grips with a suitable tie down method for the posts to the bricks piers.

I have noticed the houses of this period often had no tie down of the post and also no pin on the bottom of the post to prevent being knocked out (ie they simply sat there under load from the roof). Sometimes they had a piece of lead under the post to stop them rotting out but that was the extent they used to go to.

Obviously - a thinking person would probably try to tie them down somehow.....and I am trying to come up with a method that does not involve removing all the brick pier and rebuilding it from foundation level up (there are no concrete footings - just the bricks on ground) with rod or strapping inside.

Any suggestions or methods you have used?

Thanks
