Hi, I've just bought a canvas awning off Ebay.. the type where the canvas awning rolls up in a box/metal pelmet at the top of a window and using a wooden stick with a hook on the end of it, you use this stick to pull the blind down. The blind runs up and down on a solid metal vertical rod on each side.

it's these metal rods I'd like to clean up. They are a bit pitted. I wondering with the wear and tear of the blind running up and down what the best finish will be and what prep is needed. This blind was not expensive ($25), the canvas is colourful (green and orange). It's going on the front window of a federation style house painted half Ravelle in colour with a Manor Red tin roof. Ravelle is a light boney, beigy colour from Heritage Paints Balwyn Vic

I wondering if i need to sand these, some sort of ferrous undercoat. Final paint colour and whether acrylic or oil based gloss or satin or powdercoat or some way of rubber coating... this I'm not sure.

Thanks!
