    Default What shape?

Imagine you have a plank of wood.

In that wood there is three holes - a square, a triangle and a circle.

The challenge is to design a solid shape that will pass completely through all three holes (one hole at a time) with a sliding fit.

What kind of triangle would it be?

    It could be a cylinder.

    Cone - sorry no.

    Cylinder - sorry no.

What size triangle, not important. It will become apparent when you know the answer.

A cylinder takes care of the circle and the square, but how to incorporate the triangle? I'm gonna have to think about that.

And a cone takes care of the triangle and the circle

    The task was to
"design a solid shape that will pass completely through all three holes (one hole at a time) with a sliding fit."
no mention of it having to be a watertight fit , so ........

It would touch the triangle at 3 points, and, I believe, would give a sliding fit (provided all hole are sized suitably).

The same with the base of the cone re. the square hole , but apparently neither a cone nor a cylinder fit the answer.

Guys, has PM'd the correct answer with a link to the solution. I wasn't aware there was such a link but thank god for because I am a lousy artist.

The object in question has to be a sliding fit, ie slides through with no gaps, through all three.

If you want the answer, PM me and I will fwd you the link sent me.

The shape is a cylinder of height equal to the diameter of the base that has been truncated by two planes that intersect with the base at tangents on opposite points of the circular base, and intersect at the top of the cylinder along the line of the diameter. Circle, square and triangle...

    Cheers

If the above means nothing to you, the shape can be seen here - Triangle Circle Square
