I think if Otila had used a nondescript avatar in the first instance, until she had established her presence on the forum on the basis of her interest in woodworking, and had later posted her picture in the rogues' gallery, if she felt like doing so, she would still be a valued member of the forum. But, as it was, we could be forgiven for suspecting that she came here just to cause a stir.

If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

It really irks me when I see normal people go completely troppo and start slinging accusations and mud (mostly unfounded) and some members get offended. I don't blame them.
I have always given people the benefit of the doubt and time to prove their worth before commenting. Otherwise I just axe them 'cause I can.Pests or spammers just aren't tolerated by any of the moderators.

,
I think that the moderators do a great job on this forum in steering a course between being too easy or too hard on people who step out of line, or who come to the forum with other agendas than engaging in the exchange of woodworking information.
You are are of course right in saying that all new members should be given a fair go, but new members also have to realize that if they put up an alluring avatar in a blokey forum they must expect that it will cause a stir and maybe elicit some unwelcome comments. There is a small group of toxic feminists who are attractive but embittered by a bad experience with men, who go out of their way to lead men on, and then kick them in the nuts when they respond. I don't know if Otila was one of these, but I think she was unduly sensitive to leave as she did.

I came across a new term (to me) recently in Wikipedia. Sock Puppet. This is a false identity used by a regular forum member when they want to poke fun, make a point, or otherwise cause mischief anonymously. I don't suppose we'd have any of those around here though...
