Grunt, I'm happy to argue the merits and otherwise of all the codes, especially as I've followed all of them at one time or another - a product of living in too many states I'm afraid, including the state of dubious sanity I'm even happy to toss insults at all codes and to field the same in return. But the AFL supporters who can't acknowledge the validity of soccer really need to grow up. It might be fun for the poster at the time but it becomes very tired for the rest of us. The AFL community needs to grow up in a big way and an important part of that is admitting that there are other codes out there that have merit - I'm sorry if you like watching the 'footy show' and the like, I find those shows immensely embarrassing.
And yes, soccer has its fair share of gong heads - you'll find me launching attacks on the bigots on various soccer forums as well.
You want to make jokes about sucker, footbrawl or thugby, and you'll find me laughing and adding my own. You start acting like your own code is the only one with any validity, which those I've attacked on this forum have done (and which is why they've copped a serve), and you'll find me getting grumpy. I turn 50 on sunday, I'm allowed to now

Lignum, if you learn to show some appreciation of the other side instead of the blindness you invariably display, you'll find we'll give your attempts at 'humour' some credence. For the record, I played Australian Rules while at university and have the trophies to prove it. I haven't played any form or rugby except in parkland fun matches (which was touch football with some rather remarkable rules ) and my experience at soccer doesn't go beyond spectating and coaching a kid's team. All four codes (yes, there are two differing codes of rugby) have their joys and horrors. It's people like you Lignum, who can't see beyond your own preferance that earn my ire. All the codes have their specialties and hence their individual joys. I personally enjoy all codes for their own specialities. I feel sorry for those of you who can't.

I'm lucky in that there has been no mention at all of the soccer here at work, plenty about our local code. But the amount of it on radio and TV makes me glad I have Foxtel. Dont mind everyone supporting their own code as thats what sport is all about and a bit of pot stirring is fun. To each his own.

[quote=DanP]Not even close.
FIFA want every nation in the world to play the 'beautiful game', but IMO the biggest drawback of the game is the diving and rolling on the ground like you've been shot. I also think it is the biggest thing keeping spectators away from the game in Australia.
hit the nail on the head there!

I actually don't think I've seen too much of that in the games I've watched. The worst by far was the Australia v. Japan game, there was a bit with Croatia but not much at all against Italy or Brazil. I suppose you have to accept that as a tactic of the game, albeit not a popular one. Similar things happen in the other ball sports and people see them for what they are but accept that it's just a tactic. Like suckering a penalty in front of the goal in Rugby.
It's probably all part of the general perception that non fans have of the game that keeps them away. I remember when I was a kid, soccer was a "poofter's game". If you didn't play league, you were a girl. Actually even the girls played touch.
For me, I find it a frustrating game to watch. If you are wrapped up in it, then it can be excruiatingly exciting to watch the scurrying that goes on in front of the net but if you are emotionally detached, well frankly it can be dull to watch the ball get passed back and forth between the forwards and the centers. If you don't care about the result, then waiting 89 minutes for a goal can be a bit much.
It's a bit like the elusive rugby try. It's not uncommon for a match to go try-less, especially in the minors. At least there are penalty kicks to get points on the board.
I will never be an enthuiastic soccer fan. I wish I could get into it the way some people do because something that attracts the level of fanaticism that soccer does must have something going for it."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

do u think the soccor riots in stadiums and streets (during away games) is a consequence of frequent "little action" on the pitch ?
I'm also afraid the frequent diving and suckering a penalty will keep me away also. as will the low scores.
the aussies was robbed... its hard to feel sorry for the players though... a bunch of multi milionaires.... off they go crying back to thier clubs in england, spain, italy.. etc in thier lear jets and thier ferrari's...Zed
