Footing for Garden Bed Edge
I was just wanting to see what people recommend or have used for bedding garden edge blocks. I am looking at using Boral Gardenwall blocks unless I find anything cheaper. The problem is it is on a slope and over a 10m distance there is a 50-60cm decline. As the picture shows it will be butted against the concrete edge at the front but what should I use to sit the blocks on will compacted sand just wash away? Should I be using crusher dust or mortar or something else? I do not want to have to pull them all up again in a few months.

On the advice of a professional, I use crusher dust and
have not been disappointed.

Thanks for the advise Barry. Would it also be OK then to use crusher dust to pack behind the blocks for drainage or should I be using a larger size gravel.

G'day Aussieorchid,
If your edge is only to be one block high you shouldn't
need to worry about drainage.
If you are going higher, don't use crusher dust for
drainage, go for drainage gravel and slotted pipe.
Your local Besser supplier should have free
brochures on DIY. The one on link walls was my 'bible'
when I built my retaining wall and it sets it out nicely.
Besser recommended using concrete or road base to
build on but my local landscape supplier suggested
crusher dust and the wall hasn't moved in five years.
A professional landscaper put me on to crusher dust
for bedding pavers a long way back and it's great to
work with (compared with bedding sand).
