I saw one today...
On DIY network, Wood Works, I watched David Marks use a jointer. Not a big deal but he fed a 75mm thick piece of stock through the jointer using his hands. The worst part was that he had his thumb hooked over the back of the wood. Scary!
I was taught to ALWAYS use a push stick or hold down pads to feed stock through a jointer.

You never want to watch me using one then

Now I don’t want to start any thing controversial here but I see nothing wrong with that. 75mm is quite thick and it is not that “dangerous”. Be alert but not alarmed. Let me repeat myself for one more time.

A guy who is always wearing a business shirt while woodworking just seems wrong.

I am yet to see anyone use a push stick or any safety devise when using a jointer, tablesaw... in any of the shops I've worked in. It's like no one here knows what they're for.

Did anyone see on ABC TV last night the Aboriginal guy making boomerang blanks on a bandsaw. He didn't seem to be using the table - just holding both ends of the blank by hand - one hand in front of the blade and one behind it, and pulling it through with the front hand. Now that WAS scary!

For me, under around 45mm, I'll use a block, but thicker than that, just my hands - but as Wongo points out, keeping one's attention focussed is helpful in keeping fingers attached
