Sealing and staining KDHW doors and windows

Hi, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could help me out on this one.

We are about to have handover of our new house which has unprimed KDHW doors and windows. We were led to believe that these could be sealed after handover and have only recently found out that the ideal time to seal them was before they were put up.

We are now faced with the task of taking down three sets of French doors (each set is 3m (W) x 2.5m (H)) and three single doors plus windows in order to seal and stain them, and we are not exactly sure how to go about it.

Is it really necessary to take the doors and windows off in order to seal them? What is the correct procedure?

Any help/ advice would be appreciated.

I am in the building game and yes it better to get a coat on before you put doors windows in, but as long as you get the tops and bottoms sealed you can do them up (the doors probaly will need fitting as they adjust to there new conditions) we have found the Sicons range is good (HLS then filter 7 )

yeh typical building industry.......they will always tell you, whatever it is, can be done later......."they" want to complete, get paid and go.

It is always better to finish doors and windows when they are not fitted.

Many government contracts require painters to remove every door and window and all the handles, knobs and locks to be finished.

My brother has done this work for a painter mate many times.

french windows are fiddly, and soo much easier to do laying flat at a good working height.....if you realy need to be faster and want to do both sides at once .

hang em by screws in the hinge holes.

SOOOO many doors never get sealed and finsied properly on the top and bottom and as a result fail some years later.

As long as you mark all the hardware and don't lay excessive thickness of finish in the hinge slots, they should do back up no problem.
