Woodworking Quiz;
Greetings Friends,
We are going to construct a gazebo with 8 sides and the inscribed diameter is 12 feet. How wide are each of the sides?

if my calculations are correct
1 inch = 25.4mm
1 foot = 304.8mm
12 foot = 3657.6mm
this is the diametre of the gazebo
utilising pythagoras theorum and drawing many triangles i came up with a wall length of 1399.7mm
now the big problem of converting back into feet
4 foot 7 inch + 2.7mm
not sure how to break this into 8ths,16ths,32ths,or even 64ths
cheers

Not a feet ... afoot. As in "The game is afoot." I'm not really sure what that actually means. Does it mean perhaps that there is also a game called ahand?

What is "the inscribed diameter"?????
If you convert all the measurements to kilofurlongs and cubits it will be much simpler to calculate.

Woodworking Quiz Answer;
Greetings Friends,
I forgot that you chaps are more used to working in the metric system and as already noted you don't even know what a foot is.
An inscribed diameter is the measurement from wall to wall inside measurement as compared to the circumscribed measurement which is the out side points of a polygon.
Also as stated one inch is equals to 25 mm, so a foot would be 300mm and so on. I have always been taught in feet and inches and never worked much with metric but, I will try to explain to you the method of using feet and inches.
Now for the quiz, Figuring the inscribed measurement is a technical thing that usually is better figured by trigonometry and the scientific portion of a calculator with the capabilities of sin, cos, and tangent. I choose not to use them as I have a framing square manual that already has them laid out for me using a 12" diameter or one foot.
Now for an inscribed diameter of one foot, for an 8 sided structure is 4.9705", so all you need to do is multiply that by the diameter of 12' = 59.646" /12 = 4.9705' or rounded off to 5'.
You will note that you already had the answer right from the start on a 12' diameter as all you had to do was change the figure from " to ' and round it off.
Thank you for your support.

Sh*t fellas this is easy.
It's 1/8th of the round bit of a 12' circle.
Don't know why you make everything so hard!
Good luck
