End grain finish

Hi all,

Just a quick question on oiling end grain. I am in the middle of making a baby change table and have found that after 2 light coats of organoil DO the end grain of the table legs has gone a whiteish colour.

The finish was to be a couple of coats of DO and then a couple of coats of minwax satin wipe on. I am now unsure of what to do as I dont think that the end grain should look this way.

Do I sand back the endgrain and go more DO to get a more consistant finish or have I done something wrong? The rest of the DO on the table looks really good just the end grain that looks crappy.

Hi Shane,

It couldn't be a bit of bloom could it? We have had some rain and muggy conditions recently.

You could still try the minwax. The whitiesh look may not show through the minwax finish.

I decided to hit the endgrain with a bit of 240 sandpaper and then reoiled it. Looked a lot better so I have now put on a coat of minwax.

Looks pretty good so far.Timber grain is standing out with a nice sheen to the timber.

The minwax goes on a lot thinner than I thought it would. Lots of coats I think.

I'm no expert, but I'm not sure there's a lot of difference between danish oil and the wipe on poly. In my experience, 4 coats of minwax wop seems perfect. Difference between 3 and 4 coats is very noticeable, and I can't tell the difference between 4 and 5 or more.

I've got not much to add, but I don't do end grain very well at all. I'd been sanding it with finer grits than the rest of the work, but then with any finish it was still cruddy.
Then somebody told me about scrapers......end of problem.
The darksiders are actually onto good stuff.
