Staining / Oiling
G'day,
I am making a sign for a friends farm gate out of Iron Bark ( I think that's what it is, it's not red gum but looks like it) Anyway, I just want to know what kind of oil I should put on it to keep the nice red colour of the wood. Someone suggested oil, but didn't know the kind, or should I just use a regular stain?
Thanks for your help!
Gezz.

Click the search button above and type in something along the line of "outdoor furniture" ..... there was a discussion on this a few weeks back and there were a few things suggested .... I think they were talking about jarrah but I am sure that the same principles would apply.

In my experience, an oil will have less of a life span than an exterior stain. Something like a Deck and Timber Stain in Jarrah from Haymes maybe the go. The extra pigment in the product over an oil will help protect the timber from UV.
Do or do not.....
Just try on a piece of scrap timber first.
